The five zones

How Google decides who gets the call

Somebody in your service area is standing next to a green pool right now. They pull out their phone and type "pool service near me."

Five things load on that screen. You earn your way into each one separately, and four of them are gated.

The short version
  • Two assets gate the whole screen. A Google Business Profile and a website. Miss either and zones close at any budget.
  • The map pack has no paid door. No profile, no eligibility, no exceptions.
  • The AI answer went 6% to 45% in a year. A year ago you could ignore it.
  • Your own search lies to you. Google knows who you are and flatters you.
  • Rank changes street by street, which is why we measure 49 points instead of one.

Someone in your service area types “pool service near me.”

Here is everything on that screen, and what has to exist before you can appear in it.

Almost nobody scrolls past here. Four of the five zones above are gated. If you are not in them, you are not on the screen at all, and your website alone does not put you there.

  • AI answer

Needs a claimed profile, real reviews, and pages a model can read and cite.

No profile and no site means the model has nothing to name you with.
  • Local Service Ads

Needs a Google Business Profile, plus license, insurance and a background check.

No Google Business Profile means you cannot run these at all.
  • Paid search ads

Needs a website to send the click to, and tracking that proves the click became a call.

No website means no paid search, no Performance Max, no retargeting.
  • The map pack

Needs a claimed and complete Google Business Profile, review volume and recency, matching name, address and phone everywhere online, and proximity to the searcher. This is where the phone calls are. It is also the one zone your competitors have already claimed, which is why the three names above are not yours.

No Google Business Profile means you are not in the map. There is no other way in.
  • Organic results

Needs a website with real pages, and time. This one moves slowest of everything here.

No website means nothing to rank.
No Google Business Profile

You lose the map pack, Local Service Ads, most local relevance, and the reviews that feed both. That is where the calls are.

No website

You cannot buy a single ad on Google or Meta. There is nowhere to send the click and nothing to measure.

Two things gate everything on this screen, and we build both. They are included, built in your name.

A phone search result broken into five zones. Each zone lists what has to exist before a pool company can appear there. Without a Google Business Profile there is no map pack and no Local Service Ads. Without a website there are no paid search ads and no organic results.

3. Paid search ads

4. The map pack

A claimed and complete profile, review volume and recency, matching name, address and phone everywhere, and proximity to the searcher. No Google Business Profile. Not eligible. There is no other door.
5. Organic results
The old blue links. Fifth on the screen, often below the fold.
A website with real pages, and time. Moves slowest of anything here.No website. Nothing to rank.

So two things gate the entire screen

No Google Business Profile

No map pack, no Local Service Ads, most local relevance gone, and no review profile to feed either. That is where the calls are.

No website

Not one ad on Google or Meta. Nowhere to send the click, nothing to measure, nothing to rank, nobody to retarget.

Neither of these is a marketing opinion. They are eligibility requirements. You have the asset or you are not in the auction.
