Plain English

Every term, explained

Our industry hides behind language. We are not going to do that to you.

Every term below gets the same three lines: what it is, what it does for you, and where it matters, what breaks without it.

If something is missing, tell us and we will add it.

The four sections

Google and the map

Google Business Profile, the map pack, Local Service Ads, Performance Max, keywords, match types, quality score, bid strategies, and the rest of the Google machine.

Tracking and attribution

GA4, Tag Manager, pixels, server-side tracking, Conversions API, Enhanced Conversions, conversion events, call tracking, UTMs, and attribution. This is the section that decides whether the money works.

Money and performance

CPC, CPL, CAC, ROAS, LTV, click-through rate, conversion rate, frequency, impression share, and what each one actually tells you.

AI search and audiences

AI Overviews, ChatGPT ads, retargeting, lookalike audiences, audience signals, creative fatigue, and the newer parts of this that most operators have not run into yet.

The twelve that matter most

If you only read a dozen, read these.

TermThe one-line version
Google Business ProfileYour free Google Maps listing. Without it you are not in the map, period
Map packThe three businesses with call buttons at the top of a local search. Where the calls are
Local Service AdsGoogle's pay-per-call ads with the green badge. Requires a Business Profile
Conversion eventWhat you tell the algorithm counts as a win. Get this wrong and you buy cheap clicks forever
AttributionTying the call in your pocket back to the ad that caused it
Server-side trackingHow tracking survives phone privacy rules. Without it, ads optimize blind
Call trackingA different number per channel so you know what produced each call
Cost per leadThe number that matters. Not cost per click
Missed-call text backAn automatic text in under a minute when you cannot pick up
Lookalike audienceFinding more people who look like your actual paying customers
Geo gridChecking your ranking from many points instead of one. Your rank is different on every street
NAP consistencyYour name, address and phone matching everywhere. Boring, and it moves your rank

Why we published this

Two reasons.

So you can check our work. If you understand what a conversion event is, you can ask us what ours are set to. Good. Ask.

So you can check the other guy's work. If a marketing company cannot explain what they set your bid strategy to and why, you have learned something useful for free.

We put our price on the website for the same reason.

Find out where you actually stand.

The Route Rank Report maps 49 points across your own service area, plus your top three competitors. Free, two days, nothing to sign. We will ask for fifteen minutes to read it with you, and you can say no.
